Meet the Persecuted

Iain, Bold & Persistent

Written by Dr. Pat

Iain left his homeland for a better life in another country where he opened a butcher shop selling only products for Muslims. He found it very difficult to own the business, being responsible for marketing as well as day-to-day operations.

America had just gone into Iraq. In the Mosque, Iain overheard the Imam praying to Allah for Muslims to hate the Americans, cursing them, their wives and their children. This was quite disturbing to hear and it got him to questioning the hatred within Islam. He was struggling with his business and his religion.  He was not sleeping well.

Iain’s two brothers who had become Christians offered to pray for him. He would not accept their concern and told them there were no problems. The brothers prayed for him anyway and Iain felt a peace and happiness in his life for the very first time. He realized that his brothers’ beliefs were true, “Jesus Christ is God, the God who can change his life.”

EGYPT: Judiciary Accused of Collusion in Kidnapping & Forced Islamization of Christian Minors

Written by Mary Abdelmassih

AINA--An Egyptian court has ordered a 16-year old Christian girl to be held in a state-owned care home, instead of returning her to her family, allegedly for expressing her wish to convert to Islam. She is to be held in state care until she reaches the age of 18. The decision has been widely criticized by Copts, who say it encourages Islamists to continue unabated the abduction of Christian minors for conversion to Islam.

"The decision taken by a prosecutor in Boulaq El Dakrour district, Giza, makes him an abductor and makes the law an accomplice to the crime," said Dr. Oliver, a Coptic activist. "What this prosecutor committed is a crime -- he legitimized child abduction and detention."...

NIGERIA: Death Toll Climbs in Islamist Attacks

Boko Haram extremists take credit for bloody assaults in three towns.

January 9 (CDN) — The number of Christians killed in an Islamic extremist attack here on Thursday (Jan. 5) has risen to nine, and over the weekend the same terrorist group killed at least 21 Christians in neighboring Adamawa state, sources said.

Members of the Boko Haram group that seeks to impose sharia (Islamic law) on Nigeria emerged from a mosque near the Deeper Life Bible Church in the Boso, capital of Gombe, at about 7:30 p.m. and shot Christians attending a weekly meeting known as “The Hour of Revival,” area sources said.

Silas Ugboeze, who was in coma for three days at the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe, died 20 minutes after Compass arrived on Saturday (Jan. 7), bringing the death toll to nine and the list of those wounded in the attack to 19.

Ugboeze’s son Gideon was also killed, and his 12-year-old daughter Victoria, was wounded in both breasts. She has thus far survived along with her brother Daniel, who was also shot. Ugboeze’s widow was overcome with grief at the hospital, able to say only, “Lord, where are you? This burden is too much for me to bear.”

Of the nine killed, five died instantly and four died later at the hospital. About 45 people were present at the service when it was attacked, said the church’s 43-year-old pastor, Sunday Okoli.

The Gombe Deeper Life Bible Church, planted more than 20 year years ago, is adjacent to a mosque built less than two meters from its northern end.  It was from this mosque that the gunmen emerged to attack the church, said Okoli, based on reports he received from those present as he was away at a pastors’ conference in Lagos at the time

The Word of God

Bible Smuggling

by Dr. Pat

I looked at the boxes piled high in the lobby of the Jerusalem hotel and wondered to myself if, in fact, we could sneak all of it across both Israeli and Palestinian checkpoints along a ½ stretch of “no man’s land” into the Gaza Strip. We would be sneaking “gifts” into an area few Christians would dare go. The plan was to go to our hotel rooms, empty out our suitcases, and then bring them to the lobby.

Cloistered and hushed in the center of the hotel we transferred bibles, Muslim testimonial tracts and some educational textbooks into our luggage. My suitcase was one of the largest and the last to be packed.   As usual when God is involved, the books fit perfectly into the dozen or so suitcases that would be carried by my fellow workers.

I was part of a “tour group” to the Holy Land during the current intifada, which began in October 2000.  This intifada, which literally means, “the shaking off” has been particularly deadly for both sides.  Our real purpose in coming to the Holy Land was to encourage the remnant population of Christians that are still living there. These Christians are mostly forgotten and voiceless among the strident voices belonging to both the Arab Muslim and Jewish majorities.

It was now Saturday in Jerusalem and our “tour” bus arrived at 8 am.  We all dragged our bags to the entryway.  In the entry, we met Max, stout Egyptian with a broad perpetual smile.  Max would be our “guide” for the day.  He also ran the only Bible Store in Gaza City and this store was the destination for our trip.
